the ladder

As recently as the early 1940's, the only way to get cargo onto the island was to carry it up "The Ladder".  The Ladder is several hundred steps up the face of a cliff (see map on next post for orientation).  Ashley left the boys behind and did the hike with some friends.  The photos don't quite do it justice.
