new diggs

So my first Christmas was full of activity!  And, I got my FIRST TOOTH!!!!  I was surrounded by doting family members for two weeks while my parents packed our belongings for our move.  On Christmas morning we went to church in Dallas – I slept through the whole service, perhaps making me the best behaved baby in church!  Later that afternoon, cousin Harper came over and helped me open my first Christmas present.  The next few days were pretty quiet, but I had such fun playing with all my family.

On Wednesday (12/29) Mommy, Daddy, and I flew to Miami.  We sat in a big seat in First Class.  Mommy kept trying to lay the seat all the way down so she could sleep, but I was more comfortable when she sat upright.  We had a layover in Miami, but everyone was so tired we couldn’t even leave the room for dinner.  The next morning, we flew (in a slightly smaller seat, after an hour delay) to Sint (or Saint, depending on which side of the island you are) Maarten.  I got my first passport stamp!  It was pretty and warm as we took a cab ride down the coast to the ferry dock.  When we got to the dock, Mommy got very upset; I think we were supposed to be aboard the old fishing boat that was pulling away from the dock (15 minutes early!).  With Daddy’s calming influence, she got us a room at the hotel above the other ferry dock so we could leave for Saba first thing Friday morning.  Mommy and Daddy have been told we were fortunate to take the Friday ferry because it’s much faster and smoother than the other one.  Honestly, I didn’t notice ‘cause I slept the whole way.

When we got off the boat, we grabbed a cab for the ride UP the steep (1.5 lane) road with blind hair-pin turns.  It’s beautiful here!!  Mommy and Daddy found our cottage based on pictures alone.  We went for lunch at a restaurant down the street.  The man there made the funniest noises!  Mommy said he spoke like Daffy Duck, but I don’t know this duck.  The senior student and his wife who were assigned to welcome us spotted me as they were walking by the restaurant and correctly assumed we were the Hoods.  After a short visit, I had to insist on a nap.  Mommy joined me, and Daddy went for an exploratory walk.  We spent the rest of the afternoon settling in.  That night was my first opportunity to sleep by MYSELF and not be strapped to anyone in 2.5 days, so I slept longer than usual before asking for a snack.  Oh did I mention I have my own room now?!?!

While it’s taking a few days to get acclimated to a much quieter lifestyle with only Mommy and Daddy to entertain me, Saba will be a fun place to explore as I get bigger.  We have a porch from which I can wave to everyone passing by, and everyone may know my name by the end of the week, hehehe.  Walking past neighbors’ yards, I’ve met my first goats and cows.  There is also a rooster hollering somewhere out the front door, but I haven’t seen it, yet.  After every nap, we walk (translation: hike) along the roads to different areas.  Starting Monday (1/3), Mommy and I are going to be having lots of 1-on-1 time together (walking, playing, grocery shopping) after Daddy catches his yellow school bus every morning.

Here are some pictures of the things we’ve seen so far:
